Kitchen and social area in the office: role, location, peak hour capacity, and easy-to-maintain materials.

The social area is one of the most intensively used spaces in the office, yet it is often planned last, with whatever is left over. The effect is predictable: queues at lunchtime, noise spilling over to workstations, and a space that nobody wants to use longer than necessary.

The Role of the Social Area

This space serves two functions simultaneously. The first is practical: preparing and consuming meals. The second is social: this is where informal conversations between people from different teams most often occur. Designing solely for the first function ensures that the second has no chance to emerge.

Location

The social area should be close enough to be convenient to use, and far enough from deep-work areas so that noise does not carry over to workstations. A good solution is to place it closer to the entrance or in an area that already experiences foot traffic, with a clear separation from quiet zones.

Capacity at Peak Hours

The biggest mistake is planning for average occupancy. A kitchen works well when it can cope during lunchtime, when many people use it at once. It is worth separating functions, for example by placing the coffee machine in a different spot from the sink and microwave, so that queues do not block each other.

Materials and Maintenance

This is a zone that comes into contact with water, grease, and high temperatures. Countertops, cabinet fronts, and flooring must be resistant to daily cleaning with detergents. It is also worth providing sufficient space for waste sorting, as an undersized bin quickly ruins the order of the entire area.

Summary

Plan the social area for peak load, not the average. Separate functions to avoid queues, isolate it acoustically from deep-work areas, and choose materials resistant to intensive cleaning. A well-planned kitchen serves not only meals, but also team relationships.
